Opportunity: Starting A New Job
Opportunity presents itself in all types of packages. It turns out that it appeared last Friday afternoon in the form of a phone call. On the other end of the line was the General Manager and Vice President of Journal Broadcast Springfield Operations Rex Hansen, along with the market web coordinator.
After working for KTTS News just over a year I decided to take a leap this summer, applying for a full-time position I had heard rumors about for months. I have always had a passion for developing digital platforms and connecting communities with content that matters. This new opportunity will allow me to do exactly that.
This morning, at age 21, I signed the dotted line and accepted an offer to become Journal Broadcast Group’s first full-time Digital Content Producer in Springfield.
I’ll continue to work to help the award-winning KTTS News team deliver stories and information from the StormTeam. However I’ll also now have the chance to work with our other four flagship stations, KTTS 94.7 FM, Power 96.5, 104.1 KSGF, and 106.7 The River.
So what happens next.....
You’ll still hear me as a part of KTTS News for the next few weeks. Then in September I’ll transition into my new position producing and coordinating digital efforts.
No, this doesn’t mean I am no longer a student. I still am a full-time student at Drury University and don’t anticipate that changing. The times and way I take classes may change over the next few semesters but accepting this job won’t change one of my major life goals.
I also still plan to attend law school one day after graduating from Drury as well.
Is this the typical path for a college student? No. However neither was developing an award-winning student journalism website while I was a high school student, covering the Inauguration of our nation’s first African American president as a member of the national media, or owning my own business.
This past year I interned for the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association under the direction of the incredible Crista Hogan, who serves as Executive Director. When looking for a gift to celebrate her birthday earlier this month I found a piece with a quote that summed up what she has taught me and I leave you with that thought.
